Examining the NT Use of OT Passages to Demonstrate
The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

As any Bible-believing Christian already knows (assuming that he has actually carefully studied the entirety of Scriptures) the NT writers often apply OT passages which speak of certain characteristics or acts of Yahweh to the Lord Jesus. The only logical conclusion one can arrive at is that the NT writers clearly believed that the Lord Jesus Christ was the incarnation of Yahweh God, i.e. they believed that Yahweh God Almighty had become an actual human being in the historical person of the Lord Jesus.
In this article, we will present a host of the OT citations regarding the nature and works of Yahweh which are either quoted or alluded by the NT authors in connection with the Lord Jesus. We will also address an objection which is often raised by anti-Trinitarians in trying to deny that the NT writers believed that Jesus was the visible manifestation of Yahweh. We will then conclude with a short summary.

It is clear that the author presents Isaiah as having seen the preincarnate glory of Christ, which was the very revelation of the Father (see John 1:18; John 14:9).
sn Because he saw Christ’s glory. The glory which Isaiah saw in Isa 6:3 was the glory of Yahweh (typically rendered as “Lord” in the OT). Here John speaks of the prophet seeing the glory of Christ since in the next clause and spoke about him, “him” can hardly refer to Yahweh, but must refer to Christ. On the basis of statements like 1:14 in the prologue, the author probably put no great distinction between the two. Since the author presents Jesus as fully God (cf. In light of the foregoing, is it any wonder that the Church from its inception believed that the Lord Jesus Christ is Yahweh God Almighty?
AN OBJECTION CONSIDERED:
It is unfortunate that there are many groups that claim to believe in the Holy Bible and yet deny the position taken here regarding Jesus being Yahweh God. They assert that the NT applying OT passages that speak of the functions and characteristics of Yahweh to Jesus does not prove that the latter is Yahweh God Almighty.
They seek to undermine the identification of Jesus with Yahweh by turning to places in the NT where OT citations referring to specific individuals or groups are applied to others. Case in point:
“For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’? Or again, ‘I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son’?” Hebrews 1:5
Here, the inspired author applies a passage to Jesus which initially referred to Solomon:
“… Moreover, Yahweh declares to you that Yahweh will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.” 2 Samuel 7:11b-15.
According to 1 Chronicles 28:6 this son was Solomon:
“He said to me, ‘It is Solomon your son who shall build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.’”
“This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Matthew 11:11-15
The anti-Trinitarian seeks to demonstrate from this that the Trinitarian hasn’t proven his case regarding Jesus being Yahweh God. They claim that if Jesus is Yahweh God solely because the NT applies Yahweh passages to the Lord Jesus, then this means that Jesus is Solomon since a passage initially referring to the latter is applied to the former. This would also mean that John the Baptist was actually Elijah.
The anti-Trinitarian then reasons from this that the methodology used by Trinitarians to arrive at their belief in the deity of Christ is biblically inconsistent and invalid.
The confusion here should be apparent to the reader. It is obvious that the preceding examples do not mean that Jesus is Solomon or that John the Baptist was Elijah. Rather, the application of these passages show that Jesus and John share certain characteristics or functions with Solomon and Elijah; yet these characteristics are not unique to either Solomon or Elijah. For instance, Solomon is called God’s son due to his being chosen to rule over Israel. Yet this intimate relationship was not something unique to Solomon, since all of the Davidic kings enjoyed filial relations with God, much like their father David:
“Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one, and said: ‘I have granted help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him’… He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.” Psalm 89:19-20, 26-27
In fact, this same Psalm goes on to apply the warning given to Solomon in case he sins to all of David’s royal offspring:
“My steadfast love I will keep for him forever, and my covenant will stand firm for him. I will establish his offspring forever and his throne as the days of the heavens. If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules, if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes, but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me. Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah Psalm 89:28-37
Therefore, for Hebrews to apply to Christ a passage originally referring to Solomon doesn’t mean that Jesus is Solomon since the characteristics that are mentioned are not unique to Solomon. All the Davidic kings shared them.
In the case of John and Elijah, the latter was to be given the privilege of preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah, on honor which was bestowed on John also. It is in this sense that John is considered to be Elijah since he heralded the Messiah, the very thing that Elijah is suppose to do. The similarity is one of function, not one of identity.
But these examples are in no way parallel with the Yahweh passages due to the fact that these citations all focus on characteristics that distinguish Yahweh from all creation and from every other so-called god. Unlike the examples of Solomon and Elijah, the NT writers apply passages to Jesus that speak of the unique characteristics and functions of Yahweh. In other words, the NT writers claim that Jesus performs the works and has the very same attributes that are only true of Yahweh; no one else shares these characteristics or is able to perform these works. Hence, the similarities are not simply that of shared characteristics that others may also share in, but of identity since Jesus does those very things and has the same attributes which identify one as Yahweh God Almighty.
Here is an example of what we mean:
1. According to the OT, Yahweh alone created and sustains all things. Cf. Job 9:8; Isaiah 44:24; Nehemiah 9:6
2. According to the NT, Jesus created and sustains all things. Cf. John 1:3, 10; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:2-3, 10-12
3. Therefore, Jesus is Yahweh God.
Again:
1. According to the OT, Yahweh is immutable in contrast to creation which is mutable. Cf. Psalm 102:25-27; Malachi 3:6
2. According to the NT, Jesus is immutable. Cf. Hebrews 1:10-12; 13:8
3. Therefore, Jesus is Yahweh God.
The foregoing shows that the attempt to deny Jesus’ identification with Yahweh is based on a faulty approach which does nothing to undermine the Trinitarian position. It only exposes the logical fallacies of those who will not allow the Bible to speak for itself, but seek to read their unbiblical traditions and erroneous views into the text of Holy Scripture.
CONCLUSION:
The evidence presented in this article conclusively demonstrates that the NT writers believed the Lord Jesus was none other than Yahweh God in the flesh. The NT documents also show that the Father and the Holy Spirit are fully divine, and that these three are distinct persons. It is little wonder that the early Church was forced to formulate the doctrine of the Trinity since this is the only logical conclusion one can arrive at from a careful analysis and correct reading of the Holy Scriptures.

Introducción:
El nombre de Dios y el nombre de Jesús son temas profundamente importantes en la Biblia. Ambos temas son misterios, a los cuales debemos tratarlos con humildad y oración para llegar a comprenderlos. Algo de lo que escribo puede no ser fácil de comprender, y necesitará la guía del Espíritu Santo.
El propósito del nombre en nuestra cultura occidental es simplemente para identificar. Utilizamos nombres para distinguir una persona de otra. De otra manera jamás sabríamos de quien estamos hablando. Muchas personas eligen nombres para sus hijos porque les gusta el sonido del nombre. En un nivel subconsciente esto es probable porque conocen o admiran a personas reales o ficticias con dicho nombre. Los nombres Juan, Miguel, María, Ana, etc. no describen a quienes lo poseen de ninguna manera. Son simplemente utilizados para diferenciar una persona de otra. Pocas personas conocen el significado de los nombres ya que no son sustantivos del Castellano excepto unas pocas como Gracia, Flor, Alegría, Victoria, Dulce, etc.
En la cultura de la Biblia, los nombres eran elegidos por sus significados. Los nombres eran simplemente palabras o frases hebreas que cualquiera podía entender. Los nombres de las personas algunas veces describen la experiencia de sus padres. Moisés llamó a su hijo Gershom - un extrañtilde;o aquí. El era un exiliado en el desierto en aquel tiempo. José significa aumentado. Porque su madre Raquel oró a Dios para que pudiera tener más hijos. Benjamín significa hijo de mi diestra. Otros nombres eran proféticos. Oseas llamó a su hijo Lo-ammi que significa No mi pueblo. Isaías llamó a su hijo Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz que significa Rápido botín, próximo pillaje. Jesús recibió su nombre porque él iba a salvar a su pueblo de sus pecados.
En el reino espiritual, los nombres describen directamente a sus poseedores. Leemos en el Nuevo Testamento unos demonios llamado Legión, porque son muchos. Hay ángeles en el libro del Apocalipsis llamados Muerte y Apolion (Abbadón en hebreo) y significa Destructor en griego. El nombre Satanás significa Adversario u Oponente. Algunas personas que tienen experiencia en liberación y exorcismo encuentran que los demonios revelan sus nombres cuando son enfrentados. Ellos dan nombre como Codicia o Lujuria, etc., los cuales describen sus características.
Los nombres en la Biblia entonces tienen dos propósitos, describir e identificar.
Más allá de nuestra diferencia cultural entre el uso moderno dado a los nombres y el uso de los mismos en los tiempos de la Biblia, existe otro problema. Los pensamientos de Dios no son nuestros pensamientos, y sus caminos no son los nuestros, como dice Isaías. Porque sus caminos y sus pensamientos están mucho más alto que los nuestros. O están en última instancia, en una medida a la cual nuestra mentalidad no ha sido renacida. En un extremo positivo de esta nueva medida tendremos la mentalidad de Cristo, en el extremo negativo la afirmación pesimista de Isaías será cierta en nosotros. Debemos aprender a pensar en términos divinos antes que en términos carnales, si deseamos comprender las cosas profundas de Dios. La mentalidad de la carne es enemistad con Dios. El hombre natural no recibe las cosas del Espíritu de Dios; porque son necedades para él, y no puede comprenderlas, porque deben ser discernidas espiritualmente. Debemos tener la luz del Espíritu Santo si esperamos comprender la mentalidad de Dios. El significado que vemos en las palabras no son más que sombras del profundo e inconmensurable significado que Dios tiene guardado en ellas.
El nombre de Dios.
Mucho se ha pensado, dicho y escrito acerca del nombre de Dios. Comenzaremos entonces con la consideración de este tema. Las lecciones que aprendimos acerca del estudio del nombre de Dios pueden parecer un tanto académicas, pero se transformaran para convertirse en una preparación de un conocimiento más profundo del nombre de Jesús.
Un punto de comienzo obvio es el capitulo 3 del libro del Exodo, donde Moisés está parado frente a la zarza ardiente. Para nuestro objetivo presente, debemos mirar primero al verso 6 donde Dios se presenta a si mismo con las palabras, 'Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob'. De acuerdo a la mentalidad humana nosotros esperamos que Dios dijese, 'Yo soy el todopoderoso creador del Universo, el más inteligente, soy todo amor y quien todo lo sabe, y mi nombre es YHWH'. Esta es la forma en que un misionero trataría de introducir el concepto de Dios a una tribu animista. Dios, como vemos, no da una descripción de si mismo y ningún nombre. La única identificación que da es en términos de sus seguidores, Abraham, Isaac y Jacob -personas que exhiben de alguna manera sus características. Esto nos muestra la mentalidad y naturaleza de Dios. Palabras, nombres y descripciones son totalmente inadecuadas para él. El es descripto e identificado a la vez en su pueblo, y mas particularmente en sus hijos. Para ser comprendido, él debe ser visto en forma humana. El debe ser manifestado en la carne.
El Antiguo Testamento contiene algunos nombres y títulos para Dios. Estos incluyen el Señtilde;or de los Ejércitos, el Dios de los Cielos, el Más Alto Dios, El Saday, y otros. Han sido escritas exposiciones buenas e instructivas de sus significados, pero Jesús no hizo esto. En cambio, el dijo, 'El que me ha visto ha visto al Padre'. Las descripciones son solamente necesarias para lo que tú no puedes ver. Te puedo describir Londres a ti, pero si quieres saber como es realmente Londres, deberías mejor ir y ver!
Jesús no necesitaba describir a Dios a las personas. El mismo era la descripción. El fue y es el nombre de Dios. Tu no miras la fotografía de alguien cuando estás en su presencia. Tienes algo mejor.
Dios mandó a Moisés que vaya ante el Faraón y saque a los hijos de Israel fuera de Egipto. Moisés entonces tuvo dos problemas de identidad: el primero, 'Quien soy yo, para ir delante del Faraón?'; el segundo, 'Quien eres tú?'.
El dijo a Dios, 'Mira, yo voy a los hijos de Israel, y les diré 'el Dios de sus padres me ha enviado a ustedes.' Ahora ellos me dirán. 'Cual es su nombre?' Qué les contestaré a ellos?'
Si queremos comprender la contestación de Dios, primero debemos considerar la intención de la pregunta de Moisés. Moisés creció en una cultura politeísta. El pueblo creía en diferentes dioses, cada uno debía tener un nombre para identificar a el (ella o ello!). Puedes hablar de 'el sol' o 'la luna' porque hay sólo uno de cada uno de ellos. No puedes hablar de 'la estrella' porque hay millones de ellas, cada una debe tener un nombre para que pueda distinguirse de las otras. El sol o la luna no tienen nombres porque no necesitan.
Dios realmente tiene un nombre? Moisés pensó que lo tenía. Muchas personas piensan hoy que él lo tiene. Examinemos la revelación de la Biblia.
La contestación de Dios en el verso 14 es, 'Yo soy el que soy'. Yo creo que podría parafrasear esto como 'Yo soy yo mismo'. En otras palabras Dios está diciendo a Moisés, 'Tu pregunta es incorrecta. Yo no tengo nombre. Yo solo soy Dios y no necesito de uno, y en realidad no puedo tener un nombre para distinguirme de los otros dioses, porque no hay otros. Ni siquiera puede encontrarse un nombre para describirme adecuadamente.'
Jesús en su mayor oración sacerdotal dijo, 'Yo he manifestado tu nombre'(Juan 17:6) y 'Yo he hecho conocer tu nombre' (Juan 17:26). Estas son las únicas contestaciones reales a la pregunta de Moisés. Jesús mismo fue y es el nombre de Dios.
Dios continua diciendo, 'Di a los hijos de Israel, 'Yo soy' me ha enviado a ustedes'. Esto no suena muy bien en castellano y no mucho mejor en hebreo. La falta de claridad de esto demuestra que Dios no podía dar una respuesta directa a la pregunta de Moisés.
En el siguiente verso Dios dice: 'Di a los hijos de Israel, 'YHWH, el Dios de sus padres, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac, y el Dios de Jacob, me ha enviado a ustedes'. Ese es mi nombre para siempre y por él seré invocado de generación en generación.'
Como yo lo veo, Dios está diciendo: 'Yo no tengo nombre. La terminología humana no puede nunca describirme. Primero debo ser visto en carne y sangre, y luego ser conocido en espíritu. Ni siquiera necesito un nombre para distinguirme de los otros dioses, porque no hay otro. Sin embargo para el presente consentiré a su limitado entendimiento, y les daré algo que podrán usar temporariamente como un nombre. Ustedes pueden ser como los otros pueblos a su alrededor, cada uno de los cuales tiene un dios. Pueden usar la palabra YHWH para identificarme.' La naturaleza de nuestro Dios, el único Dios, desciende hasta nosotros para que él pueda elevarnos hasta él.
Moisés debió haber aprendido de la experiencia de Jacob. La historia de Jacob peleando con el ángel es recordada hacia el final del Génesis en el capítulo 32. Jacob peleó con un hombre, quien finalmente le pregunta su nombre. 'Jacob', él contesta. 'Tu nombre no será más Jacob, sino Israel; porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres y has vencido', dijo el ángel. Jacob ahora tiene una nueva identidad y descripción. Nosotros, como Jacob, debemos tener un nuevo nombre. Jacob luego dijo, 'Por favor dime tu nombre'. La contestación del ángel fue sólo una evasiva, 'Porque es que tú me preguntas mi nombre?'. Como Moisés, el hizo la pregunta incorrecta. El quiso reducir la esencia divina en algo humano.
Manoah, el padre de Samson, recibió la visita de un ángel que le dijo que su esposa engendraría un hijo quien sería un Nazareno. Después de escuchar la instrucciones para la crianza del niñtilde;o. Manoah pregunto al ángel su nombre. El recibió el mismo tipo de respuesta que Jacob había recibido: 'Porque me preguntas mi nombre, viendo que es incomprensible?'
Historia del Nombre.
No mucho después de encontrar a Dios en la zarza ardiente, Moisés lo encontró de nuevo en el Monte Sinaí y recibió los Diez Mandamientos. El tercer fue 'No tomarás el nombre de YHWH tu Dios en vano'. Regresaremos sobre el significado de esto más tarde, pero primero consideraremos los efectos que estos mandamientos tenían sobre los Judíos. En valor nominal hay una manera de jamás decir el nombre de YHWH, y cualquier otro nombre, en vano, y esto es no decirlo nunca. Esto todavía se mantiene hoy en día. Siempre que los Judíos leen la Biblia donde dice YHWH, ellos leen como Adonai que significa Señtilde;or o ha-shem que significa el Nombre.
Es una extrañtilde;a 'coincidencia' que en hebreo se escribiese originariamente sin vocales. Esto significa que, como el nombre de YHWH no podía ser pronunciado tampoco podía ser escrito completamente, nadie podía saber su pronunciación original. La palabra Jehová fue formada tomando las vocales de Adonai y puestas dentro de YHWH. Aparece por primera vez en un manuscrito del siglo catorce y ciertamente no tiene un origen más antiguo.
Después de la primera dispersión de los Judíos a Babilonia y Egipto, ellos sintieron la necesidad de traducir el Antiguo Testamento al griego. El resultado fue la versión Septuagin, traducida por setenta sabios en Egipto en el siglo tres a.C. Deberíamos esperar que esta versión del griego nos dé una pista acerca de como deberíamos pronunciar YHWH. ¡Ay!, la reverencia por el nombre impide esto. Otros nombres son transliterados desde el hebreo al griego, pero YHWH es reemplazado siempre por Kurios, en griego significa Señtilde;or. Cuando el Nuevo Testamento cita al Viejo Testamento, en general usa el Septuagin. Esto significa que encontramos Kurios en lugar de YHWH aquí también. Muchas traducciones al castellano de la Biblia siguen esta tradición de traducir YHWH como SEñtilde;OR con letras mayúsculas.
Es interesante notar que el griego no tiene equivalente para las letras hebreas H y W (o V). Sólo la Y, la primera letra de YHWH puede ser transliterada al griego (por iota). Esto hace imposible escribir el nombre en griego.
Debemos sumar a esto el decir que Dios dio el nombre de YHWH a Moisés como una medida temporal. Cuando el cumplió su propósito, él borró su recuerdo en tres etapas. 1) El permitió que los judíos tuvieran una reverencia espuria de el, para que no se atrevieran a pronunciarlo. 2) El causó que en hebreo se escribieran sin las vocales, para que no pueda ser completamente recordado, y 3) El no permitió que pudiera ser transliterado al griego ni a ninguna otra lengua mientras su pronunciación fuera conocida.
El tercer mandamiento.
Debemos regresar ahora al tercer mandamiento. 'No tomarás el nombre de YHWH tu Dios en vano'. Casi todos interpretan este mandamiento como si significara 'No blasfemar'. Esta interpretación tiene muchos siglos de tradición detrás, pero me atrevería a sugerir que de última no es su significado primario. Los diez mandamientos se inician con la declaración. 'Yo soy YHWH, tu Dios, quien te sacó de la tierra de Egipto, fuera de la casa de esclavitud'. Qué significa 'tomar un nombre'? La palabra hebrea nasa significa primariamente tomar, llevar o sostener. Así como los hijos toman el apellido de sus padres. Los israelitas fueron tomados y llevaban el nombre de su Dios, el Dios que los adoptó, y los sacó de la tierra de Egipto. Ellos serían sus representantes y poseedores de su nombre. Ellos no debían hacer esto en vano.
Jesús sufrió y murió porque él trato de llevarnos fuera de la tierra espiritual de Egipto. El quiere ahora darnos su nombre. Tal vez esto sea porque nosotros frecuentemente lo usamos en vano, es por eso que el mundo frecuentemente lo blasfema.
El nombre de Jesús.
Que honor fue cuando Dios, el gran Creador y Señtilde;or de todo el universo, el Ser infinito que esta más allá de toda descripción, tomó un nombre en lenguaje humano por el cual él pueda ser conocido. Mayor honor siguió. En la plenitud de los tiempos él se hizo carne. Instrucciones específicas fueron dadas en sueñtilde;os a José y a María por el ángel Gabriel: 'Le pondrán por nombre Jesús'. El Nuevo Testamento ni una vez menciona el nombre de YHWH, pero da gran importancia al nombre de Jesús.
Hemos considerado el nombre YHWH, y la reverencia que se le da hoy en día a un nombre del cual nadie sabe como pronunciarlo. Encontramos un paralelo sorprendente con el nombre de Jesús. Cada lengua pronuncia su nombre de una manera diferente. Ninguna de las cinco letras que forman su nombre en las lenguas de origen latino tiene una pronunciación consistente en las diferentes lenguas europeas. La J tiene por lo menos 4 pronunciaciones diferentes incluyendo Y y CH. La E pueden tener el fonema de E o I. La S puede ser S, SH o Z. La U tiene menos variaciones. La S final puede estar presente o ausente. Verdaderamente el nombre hebreo Yeshua y el castellano Jesús no tienen sonidos fonéticos en común.
Sabemos todos que significa cuando decimos Jesús? Históricamente hablando, si lo sabemos. Jesús significa la persona descripta en el Nuevo Testamento quien vivió dos mil añtilde;os atrás y fundó la fe cristiana. Espiritualmente hablando es un asunto diferente. Realmente todos hablamos de la misma persona? Para las tres cuarta parte de la población mundial Jesús, si fuera conocido por todos, es el fundador de una religión extrañtilde;a. En el mundo occidental para una minoría Jesús es el Hijo del hombre, el Hijo de Dios, el Salvador, el Sanador, el Señtilde;or y el Amigo. Para el resto, cada uno tiene una idea diferente de acuerdo a su tradición, parcialidad y prejuicio.
Es interesante que hay cuatro personas llamadas Jesús en el Nuevo Testamento, a lado de Jesús que domina en sus páginas. Jesús era un nombre común. El pueblo lo llamaba Jesús de Nazaret para aclarar de quien estaban hablando.
A donde nos lleva todo esto? Qué es realmente el nombre del Hijo de Dios? La respuesta, yo creo, es como la respuesta a nuestra primer pregunta, 'Qué es el nombre de Dios? Jesús fue el nombre, la descripción y la identidad de Dios para todo aquel que se encontró con él cuando caminaba en la Tierra, así como lo es para nosotros su pueblo hoy. Llegaremos a ser el nombre, descripción e identidad de Jesús para el mundo. Jesús revela a Dios a su pueblo. Su pueblo debe revelarlo a él al mundo. Debemos ser la manifestación o el nombre de Jesús para el mundo, así como Jesús es la manifestación o nombre de Dios para su pueblo.
Este concepto es probablemente nuevo y difícil de comprender. Estamos familiarizados en pensar que somos el cuerpo de Cristo o el templo del Espíritu Santo. Estas ideas están explícitamente establecidas en la Biblia. Nuestra familiaridad con las palabras de las Escrituras, ¡ay!, frecuentemente aceptamos las profundas verdades de Dios muy ligeramente
La idea que deberíamos ser el nombre de Jesús no está claramente establecido en el Nuevo Testamento, pero coincide y arroja luz en muchos pasajes, los cuales consideraremos ahora.
Bautizado dentro de su Nombre.
La frase 'siendo bautizado dentro de su nombre' aparece varias veces en el Nuevo Testamento. (Muchas versiones la traducen como 'en' su nombre). También leemos de 'siendo bautizado dentro de su cuerpo'. Estas dos frases se corresponden perfectamente ahora. Su cuerpo es su pueblo santificado. Su nombre es su pueblo santificado. Su nombre y su cuerpo son lo mismo. Ambas frases hablan de un profunda inmersión dentro del Padre y del Hijo. El bautismo real en la mirada de Dios no es una ceremonia que el hombre puede ver, ni siquiera es una experiencia dramática en lo sobrenatural. Más bien es una continua inmersión dentro de Dios por el cual llegamos a ser uno con él, que podemos ser llamados su cuerpo y su nombre.
En materia de bautismo el evangelio de Mateo y el libro de los Hechos parece contradecirse uno con otro. En Mateo 28:19 Jesús instruye a sus discípulos a 'bautizar dentro del nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo'. En el libro de los Hechos, los discípulos bautizan en o dentro del nombre de Jesús. Para Dios, un nombre no es una secuencia de sonidos fonéticos que deben ser pronunciados correctamente. Es el pueblo santificado y la separación para El. A través del pueblo el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo se harán conocer al mundo. Con este nuevo entendimiento encontramos la armonía en las escrituras.
Santificado sea tu nombre.
Jesús enseñtilde;ó a sus discípulos la oración, 'Padre nuestro, santificado sea tu nombre, venga tu reino'. Millones de personas recitan esta oración diariamente, pero pocos la comprenden. Ahora tal vez podemos ver su significado más claramente. El nombre que será bendecido o santificado era Jesús mismo y aquellos a quienes él llame. En Juan capítulo 17 registra la última oración de Jesús en el Getsemaní antes de su arresto. Oró por sus discípulos diciendo, 'Santifícalos en la verdad, tu palabra es la verdad'(verso 17) y 'Y por ellos me santifico a mí mismo, para que ellos también sean santificados en la verdad'(verso 19). Ambas oraciones están perfectamente acordes a la súplica para la santificación de sí mismo y de su pueblo.
Así cuando Jesús oró la oración que millones recitan diariamente, su primera suplica, 'santificado sea tu nombre' fue una oración para la separación de su pueblo en santidad. Sólo en esta base la segunda súplica, 'venga tu reino', encontrará su complemento. Cuando su pueblo sea santificado, su reino vendrá.
Nombres, lugares, construcciones y días no pueden nunca ser verdaderamente santificado. Estas cosas en su naturaleza no pueden ser santas. Ellos sirven a un propósito y tienen un tiempo, y son sólo sombras de la realidad. Sólo las personas pueden ser santas. El Espíritu Santo descienden en las personas y las aparta para Dios.
Exaltación de su Nombre.
En el capítulo 2 de Filipenses habla de Jesús pasando de humillación y muerte a la resurrección y exaltación. 'Por lo cual Dios lo exaltó, y le otorgó el Nombre que está sobre todo nombre, para que al nombre de Jesús toda rodilla se doble'. Puede su nombre en este contexto ser su pueblo?
En el capítulo 1 del Apocalipsis, Juan muestra una visión de la cabeza y cuerpo de Cristo glorificado en su totalidad. Su voz no es la simple voz de Jesús, pero es como el sonido de grandes aguas. Esta no es la cabeza de Jesús solamente, sino el cuerpo de Cristo completo. Juan cayó postrado a sus pies como muerto. Llega el tiempo cuando la cabeza que es Jesús recibirá el cuerpo completo. Este cuerpo es el nombre ante el cual cada rodilla se doblará.
Otras escrituras indican que el pueblo se postrará ante el cuerpo de Cristo. En Apocalipsis 3:9 leemos 'Te voy a entregar algunos de la Sinagoga de Satanás.....Yo haré que vayan a postrarse delante de tus pies.' Isaías 45:14 dice 'ante ti se postrarán y te suplicarán', Isaías 49:23 y 60:14 son similares.
Esto no será como cuando los musulmanes se arrodillan en las mezquitas postrandosé así físicamente. Más bien será un arrodillarse en espíritu como personas que ven cara a cara a Dios manifestado en carne. Cuando la reina de Saba encontró al rey Salomón, y escuchó su sabiduría, y vio toda su riqueza, leemos que se quedó sin aliento. Ella fue completamente llena de maravilla, respeto, admiración y amor.
Conclusión:
Como contemplamos el alto propósito para el cual Dios nos ha llamado, sólo podemos saber que estamos muy lejos de sus designios. Somos completamente inadecuados e indigno por naturaleza para ser su nombre y su representación en la tierra y verdaderamente en los cielos también.
Dios ve y conoce esto mucho más claramente que nosotros mismos, y su plan provee del camino necesario. El cambio y la transformación no es nuestro trabajo sino el suyo. No debe sorprendernos cuando el comienza un profundo y más radical trabajo que cualquier experiencia previa en nosotros. Este trabajo nos separará de los hombres, para así poder unirnos en el espíritu a Dios. Antes de poder ser sus verdaderos representantes, él debe tratar con nuestra total naturaleza carnal.
Ingresaremos en la muerte y resurrección de nuestro Salvador. Seremos participantes de su sufrimiento y humillación. Después de sufrir con él estaremos listos para reinar con él. Apresurémonos como Pablo hacia este alto llamado de Dios en Cristo Jesús.

¿Se ha preguntado usted como se llamaba Jesús antes de nacer en la Tierra? En este tema usted obtendrá conocimiento suficiente en cuanto al Jesús del Antiguo Testamento.
Jesús dijo que debemos de ser bautizados el nombre de tres personas:
Mateo 28:19 Por tanto, id, y doctrinad á todos los Gentiles, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.
¿Será que debemos de ser bautizados en tres nombres? Si es así, entonces la Biblia se contradice al decir que solo hay un nombre dado a los hombres en la cual podamos ser salvos:
Hechos 4:12 Y en ningún otro hay salud; porque no hay otro nombre debajo del cielo, dado á los hombres, en que podamos ser salvos.
¿Por qué la Biblia nos manda a bautizar en el nombre de tres personas y también en el nombre de Jesús?
Lo que sucede es que el nombre de las tres personas es el mismo. Ese nombre es el tetragrámaton que se escribió en los diez mandamientos y nosotros en español lo referimos por el nombre de YHWH/Yahweh.
A continuación, voy a mostrar un ejemplo donde usted puede ver que YHWH/Yahweh habla en plural dándonos la idea de que son varias las personas hablando:
Génesis 11:6-7 dijo YHWH/Yahweh. He aquí el pueblo es uno, y todos éstos tienen un lenguaje… Ahora pues, descendamos, y confundamos allí sus lenguas, para que ninguno entienda el habla de su compañero.
El nombre “YHWH/Yahweh” es el nombre de las tres personas que se mencionan en Mateo 28:19.
En un tema que hice titulado ¿Es Jesús Dios?, muestro que Dios es simplemente un titulo que se le atribuye a una entidad o a varias entidades en conjunto actuando como una sola. Solo hay un Dios, pero ese Dios está compuesto por tres personas o entidades sobrenaturales. El nombre propio de ese único Dios es YHWH/Yahweh.
Isaías 45:5 Yo YHWH/Yahweh, y ninguno más hay: no hay Dios fuera de mí…
Este versículo dice que no hay otro Dios fuera de YHWH/Yahweh. Preste atención, dice únicamente fuera de YHWH/Yahweh. ¿Qué pasaría si estuviera en conjunto con YHWH/Yahweh? ¿Sería Dios juntamente con YHWH/Yahweh? La respuesta es sí.
Al Jesús ser uno con el Padre tal y como el dijo, esto lo coloca en conjunto con YHWH/Yahweh al igual que el Padre, y el Espíritu Santo.
En todo el Antiguo Testamento, Jesús se mostraba físicamente bajo la identidad del “Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh” y en muchas ocasiones ocultó su identidad para no usar su verdadero nombre.
Por ejemplo, Jacob luchaba contra un ángel que no quiso decir su nombre:
Génesis 32:29 Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendijo lo allí.
En el versículo siguiente usted verá que Jacob sabía que el ángel era el mismo Dios.
Génesis 32:30 Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
El ángel no quiso decir su nombre pero Jacob sabia que era el mismísimo Dios.
En esta otra ocasión, el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh notifica que su nombre es oculto. ¿Podrá algún ser creado tener un nombre oculto? Vea lo que dice la Biblia:
Jueces 13:17-18 Entonces dijo Manoa al ángel de YHWH/Yahweh: ¿Cómo es tu nombre, para que cuando se cumpliere tu palabra te honremos? Y el ángel de YHWH/Yahweh respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre, que es oculto?
Si usted sigue leyendo la historia en los siguientes versículos, se dará cuenta de cual es el nombre de este misterioso ángel. Vea los siguientes versículos:
El próximo versículo le mostrará que el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh es Dios y también se llama YHWH/Yahweh.
Jueces 13:21-23 Y el ángel de YHWH/Yahweh no tornó á aparecer á Manoa ni á su mujer. Entonces conoció Manoa que era el ángel de YHWH/Yahweh. Y dijo Manoa á su mujer: Ciertamente moriremos, porque á Dios [elohim] hemos visto.
Al final del versículo anterior, Manoa claramente reconoce que han visto a Dios.
La palabra elohim fue la palabra original hebrea que se utilizó en la Biblia. Esta palabra es la forma plural de Dios. Pero esto no para aquí, luego, si usted sigue leyendo en el versículo 23 verá que la mujer de Manoa llama al ángel de YHWH/Yahweh por su nombre verdadero que es YHWH/Yahweh:
Jueces 13:23 Y su mujer le respondió: Si YHWH/Yahweh nos quisiera matar, no tomara de nuestras manos el holocausto y el presente…
Es evidente que este personaje es YHWH/Yahweh puesto que aceptó un sacrificio que solamente a Dios se le ofrecía. Vea los versículos 19 y 20.
En el texto a continuación, usted podrá ver al Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh reprendiendo a Satanás.
Zacarías 3:1-2 Y mostrome á Josué, el gran sacerdote, el cual estaba delante del ángel de YHWH/Yahweh; y Satán estaba á su mano derecha para serle adversario.
Y dijo YHWH/Yahweh á Satán: YHWH/Yahweh te reprenda, oh Satán; YHWH/Yahweh, que ha escogido á Jerusalén, te reprenda…
En el versículo uno, usted puede ver bien claro que dice “Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh” y sin embargo en el versículo dos dice plenamente “YHWH/Yahweh.” Nótese que en el versículo dos YHWH/Yahweh está pidiendo que YHWH/Yahweh reprenda a Satanás. ¿No se encuentra usted esto raro? Lo que pasa es que el ángel de YHWH/Yahweh es Jesús que también se llama YHWH/Yahweh.
Ahora vamos a ver la evidencia más contundente que le asombrará totalmente.
¿Sabe usted quien entregó los Diez Mandamientos a Moisés en el monte Sinaí?
Veamos como dice la Biblia:
Éxodo 19:24-25 Y YHWH/Yahweh le dijo: Ve, desciende, y subirás tú, y Aarón contigo: mas los sacerdotes y el pueblo no traspasen el término por subir á YHWH/Yahweh, porque no haga en ellos estrago. Entonces Moisés descendió al pueblo y habló con ellos.
Éxodo 20:1-2 Y Habló Dios todas estas palabras, diciendo: Yo soy YHWH/Yahweh tu Dios, que te saqué de la tierra de Egipto, de casa de siervos.
Estos textos muestran bien claro que YHWH/Yahweh fue quien entregó a Moisés la ley. Veamos otros textos mucho más claros:
Nehemías 9:6,13 Tú, Oh YHWH/Yahweh, eres solo; tú hiciste los cielos, y los cielos de los cielos, y toda su milicia, la tierra y todo lo que está en ella, los mares y todo lo que hay en ellos; y tú vivificas todas estas cosas, y los ejércitos de los cielos te adoran. Y sobre el monte de Sinaí descendiste…
YHWH/Yahweh mismo descendió al monte Sinaí. Esto es algo que nadie puede discutir. Pero, ahora veremos que quien realmente bajó, fue el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh que es Jesús y que también se llama YHWH/Yahweh. Vea el relato mismo de Moisés:
Éxodo 3:2 Y apareciósele el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh en una llama de fuego en medio de una zarza: y él miró, y vió que la zarza ardía en fuego, y la zarza no se consumía.
Moisés mismo contó que fue el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh quien estaba en la zarza ardiente.
Mire ahora lo que dijo el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh a Moisés:
Éxodo 3:3-4 Entonces Moisés dijo: Iré yo ahora, y veré esta grande visión, por qué causa la zarza no se quema. Y viendo YHWH/Yahweh que iba á ver, llamólo Dios de en medio de la zarza…
Dice bien claro que Dios, o sea el Ángel lo llamó de en medio de la zarza. Vea entonces lo que dijo el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh a Moisés:
Éxodo 3:6 Y dijo: Yo soy el Dios de tu padre, Dios de Abraham, Dios de Isaac, Dios de Jacob. Entonces Moisés cubrió su rostro, porque tuvo miedo de mirar á Dios.
Estos textos son muestra contundente de que el Ángel de YHWH/Yahweh es Dios y también se llama YHWH/Yahweh. Ahora veamos lo que dice el Nuevo Testamento en cuanto a este tema.
Hechos 7:35 A este Moisés, al cual habían rehusado, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por príncipe y juez? á éste envió Dios por príncipe y redentor con la mano del ángel que le apareció en la zarza.
¿Claro verdad? El Ángel fue quien apareció a Moisés.
Hechos 7:38 Este es aquél que estuvo en la congregación en el desierto con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sinaí…
¿Con quien hablaba Moisés? Con el Ángel verdad. ¿Cómo dijo el Ángel que se llamaba?
Respuesta: Éxodo 20:1-2… Yo soy YHWH/Yahweh tu Dios… Gloria a Dios que Jesús se llama YHWH/Yahweh.
Ahora mire lo que dijeron los ángeles cuando Jesús subió al cielo después de haber estado en la tierra:
Salmos 24:9-10 Alzad, Oh puertas, vuestras cabezas, Y alzaos vosotras, puertas eternas, Y entrará el Rey de gloria. ¿Quién es este Rey de gloria? YHWH/Yahweh de los ejércitos, El es el Rey de la gloria. ¡¡¡Amen!!!
Ahora usted no tiene excusa para no guardar los diez mandamientos de Jesús que fueron escritos en dos tablas de piedra que son los dos grandes mandamientos, amor a Dios y amor al prójimo.
Capítulo 10
El Nombre "Jehová"
En la Biblia, los nombres tienen significado. Dios recibe diferentes nombres y cada uno enfatiza un aspecto particular de Su carácter: Su divinidad, Su poder, etc.
El Significado de "Jehová".
"Jehová" es el nombre hebreo que equivale a "Yo Soy". En algunos idiomas se traduce como "El Eterno" porque describe Su eternidad y autoexistencia. Proviene de la misma raíz del verbo "ser". A menudo se usa cuando existe una estrecha relación entre Dios y una persona.
"Yo Soy" y "Jehová" se Usan Indistintamente
Dios expresó Su eternidad en otra forma cuando se llamó a Sí mismo "Yo Soy". Cuando El estaba enviando a Moisés a liberar de Egipto a Su pueblo, Moisés le preguntó:
"He aquí que llego yo a los hijos de Israel, y les digo: El Dios de vuestros padres me ha enviado a vosotros. Si ellos me preguntaren: ¿Cuál es su nombre?, ¿qué les responderé? Y respondió Dios a Moisés: YO SOY EL QUE SOY. Y dijo: Así dirás a los hijos de Israel: YO SOY me envió a vosotros" (Exodo 3:13-14).
El siguiente versículo usa el nombre Jehová:
"Además dijo Dios a Moisés: Así dirás a los hijos de Israel: Jehová, el Dios de vuestros padres, el Dios de Abraham, Dios de Isaac y Dios de Jacob, me ha enviado a vosotros. Este es mi nombre para siempre; con él se me recordará por todos los siglos" (Exodo 3:15).
En este pasaje, el nombre de Dios se expresa con dos palabras hebreas diferentes: una se traduce "Yo soy" y la otra "Jehová". Se dice que ambos son nombres de Dios y ambos expresan la idea de que Dios es el eterno.
Jesús se Identificó con Jehová.
Para identificarse con Jehová, Jesucristo se aplicó el nombre "Yo soy", usando los términos griegos ego eimi, que significan "yo soy": "Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Antes que Abraham fuese, yo soy" (Juan 8:58). El próximo versículo indica claramente que los judíos incrédulos supieron que Cristo estaba dando a entender que El era igual a "Yo soy", es decir, a Jehová. Ellos pensaron que Su declaración era una blasfemia, así que trataron de matarlo.
Las Profecías del Antiguo Testamento Equiparan a Jehová con Cristo.
En Zacarías 12:10, una profecía que ya ha indicado que es Jehová quien habla (12:1, 4), El dice:
"... y mirarán a mí, a quien traspasaron".
Esta es una referencia a la crucifixión. ¿A quién traspasaron en la crucifixión? En este pasaje se le llama Jehová.
Jeremías 23:6, otra profecía, dice que en Su segunda venida, al renuevo justo de David se le dará el nombre de "Jehová". El versículo dice: "Y este será su nombre con el cual le llamarán: Jehová, justicia nuestra". La Traducción del Nuevo Mundo añade la palabra "es", lo que oculta el hecho de que se refiere a Cristo, pero elimina toda posible duda de que el nombre hebreo que se usa es "Jehová": "Y este es su nombre con el cual se le llamará: Jehová Es Nuestra Justicia".
No es Erróneo Referirse a Jehová Usando Sus Otros Nombres.
El Nuevo Testamento usa varios nombres para Dios. Veamos aquí tres ejemplos:
"Pues no debes postrarte ante otro dios, porque Jehová, cuyo nombre es Celoso, él es un Dios celoso" (Exodo 34:14, Traducción del Nuevo Mundo).
Cuando Jesús clamó a Dios desde la cruz, dijo: "Elí, Elí, ¿lama sabactani? Esto es: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?" (Mateo 27:46).
Cuando Jesús enseñó a los discípulos a orar, dijo: "Vosotros, pues, oraréis así: Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre" (Mateo 6:9).
El Nombre "Jehová" se Puede Traducir.
Los traductores de la versión Nuevo Mundo tratan de representar el sonido de este nombre para Dios en hebreo, escribiendo "Jehová". En otras versiones de la Biblia se traduce la palabra hebrea con el término "Señor". Al representar el sonido de la palabra hebrea con "Jehová", se da una idea de cómo sonaba la palabra, pero no es exacta porque el término hebreo empieza con una letra que suena como "I", no como "J".
Algunas personas opinan que es mejor no traducir el nombre como "Señor", como hacen algunas versiones, sino usar el nombre "Jehová". ¿Existe alguna razón que justifique la traducción como "Señor"?
El Nuevo Testamento se escribió originalmente en griego bajo la inspiración de Dios. Cuando el Nuevo Testamento griego -del que se tradujo nuestro Nuevo Testamento- cita la palabra "Jehová" del Antiguo Testamento hebreo, no escribe el nombre hebreo con letras griegas, sino que lo traduce con el término griego Kurios ("Señor"). De este modo, Dios nos permite saber que es correcto traducir "Jehová" en otros idiomas.
Además, el Antiguo Testamento completo se tradujo al griego alrededor del año 200 a.C. Esta traducción, llamada la Septuaginta, también traduce la palabra hebrea para "Jehová" con el término griego Kurios. A veces cuando el Nuevo Testamento cita un pasaje del Antiguo Testamento, lo cita de la traducción griega.
Bajo la inspiración de Dios, el Nuevo Testamento griego se refiere a Cristo con la misma palabra, Kurios ("Señor"), que usa para traducir "Jehová". Por ejemplo, el título completo "Señor Jesucristo" se encuentra 82 veces en el Nuevo Testamento (vea Romanos 5:1). Kurios no es un término específico que siempre significa Cristo; a veces se usa para referirse a la persona que ocupa el lugar de autoridad.
Respecto a la regla de que la Traducción del Nuevo Mundo siempre copia el nombre "Jehová" cuando se usa en el original, existe por lo menos una clara excepción. En este caso, los testigos de Jehová lo traducen como "Señor". ¿Por qué?
La Excepción: Jehová en Salmos 34:8 es Cristo en 1 Pedro 2:3:
Como regla, cuando se usa el término Kurios en el Nuevo Testamento griego, la Traducción del Nuevo Mundo siempre lo traduce como "Jehová" cuando se refiere al Padre, y como "Señor" cuando se refiere a Jesucristo. Dondequiera que el Nuevo Testamento cita el Antiguo, los traductores de la versión del Nuevo Mundo sabían si debían usar "Señor" o "Jehová", porque notaban si la palabra hebrea que el Nuevo Testamento citaba era "Jehová".
Sin embargo, en 1 Pedro 2:3 se enfrentaron a un verdadero problema. El pasaje cita Salmos 34:8: "Gusten y vean que Jehová es bueno..." (Traducción del Nuevo Mundo). El nombre de Jesucristo es "sobre todo nombre" (Filipenses 2:9). Esto no se debe a que un hombre es superior a Jehová, sino a que Jesucristo es Jehová.

El nombre que usted prefiera usar para Dios no es tan importante, y en gran parte depende de cuál de los atributos divinos quiera enfatizar.
