Julio I fijó para la Iglesia de Oriente la solemnidad de Navidad el 25 de diciembre, en vez del 6 de enero, junto con la Epifanía. Tomó esta fecha porque, en el calendario juliano, el solsticio de invierno ocurría en ese día, siendo este acontecimiento festejado por muchos pueblos del Hemisferio Norte como un nuevo renacer del ciclo de la vida.

Desde finales del siglo IV, el cristianismo empieza a celebrar la tradición de la Navidad el 25 de Diciembre. El Papa Julio I fijó la fecha del 25 de diciembre, día próximo a muchas fiestas del solsticio de invierno que se celebran en la antigüedad. Debe entenderse que es la conjunción de costumbres y tradiciones heredadas. Las costumbres, mitos y leyendas se han ido agregando con posterioridad a lo largo de los siglos provienen de muchos países diferentes, hasta llegar a la actual celebración de la Navidad.

El papa Julio I pidió en el 350 que el nacimiento de Cristo fuera celebrado el 25 de diciembre, lo cual fue decretado por el papa Liberio en 354. La primera mención de un banquete de Navidad en tal fecha en Constantinopla, data del 379, bajo Gregorio Nacianceno. La fiesta fue introducida en Antioquía hacia el 380. En Jerusalén, Egeria, en el siglo IV, atestiguó el banquete de la presentación, cuarenta días después del 6 de enero, que debe haber sido la fecha de celebración del nacimiento. El banquete de diciembre alcanzó Egipto en el siglo V.La Navidad es la fiesta cristiana más popular, pese a que la Iglesia considera que es más importante la Pascua. Y por tal motivo es la que contiene más tradiciones.
